Everyone knows Woody Guthrie's "This Land Is Your Land". But few know that some of the original lyrics may have been censored to make the song less "political".
Enter Pete Seeger, who performed the song with Bruce Springsteen at Obama's inaugural festivities, original lyrics restored. The earliest known recording at the Smithsonian includes this verse:
"There was a big high wall there that tried to stop me;
Sign was painted, it said private property;
- But on the back side it didn't say nothing;
- That side was made for you and me."
And this one:
- As I go walking that freedom highway;
- Nobody living can ever make me turn back
- This land was made for you and me."
So who does this land belong to? The poor and the disenfranchised, not just the rich and powerful.
One shadowy morning Under the steeple In the relief line I saw my people. As they stood there hungry I started wonderin' If this land was made for you and me.

Go for someone who makes you smile because it takes only a smile to make a dark day seem bright.
