"There can be no real democracy which does not fully maintain the rights of man, as man."
--Salmon Chase, 1854, from Team of Rivals
Chase was a U.S. Senator from Ohio, an outspoken abolitionist, and one of Abraham Lincoln's rivals for the Republican Presidential nomination in 1860. He became Lincoln's Secretary of the Treasury.
President Obama, a student of Lincoln, would do well to heed those words as he crafts a new American -Israeli policy, one that will ultimately lead to peace in Palestine.
One big difference. Obama is not President of Israel.
